Re: Cavendish

Hello Frank,

Thanks for giving that link to your cousin's family tree - what a wonderful amount of information, including bringing Lewis Brooks Cavendish's family right up to date. I notice she does have a different birth year for John Cavendish than I have, though:

From the Jurby parish registers it can be seen that John was baptised in 1813, rather than 1815, although that date would tie in better with the age given in the censuses for New Albany, Ohio.

Jurby, 1813 May 23rd John, son of Thos. Cavendish and Margt Killey baptised
Jurby Baptisms 1818 Thos, son of Thos Cavendish and Margt Killey, privately Baptized Nov 1818, recd June 22nd 1833
Jurby 1821 April 1st Jane, daur of Thos Cavendish & Margt Killey
Jurby 1824 Jan 11th Richard, son of Thos Cavendish & Margt Killey

John Cavendish is said to have married on 30 Dec 1840 Ohio born Mary Jane Hughes, who seems to be the daughter of Job Hughes and Selinda Goodrich.

1860 US Census:
New Albany, Ohio
Jno Cavendish, 45, Blacksmith, Isle of Mann
Mary J, 38, Domestic
Jno, age 18
Eliza, age 16
Thomas, age 11
William, 9
Frances, 6
Henry, 5
Margaret, 4
Cha, 8 months

All except John senior born in Ohio.

John & Mary Jane had 10 children, of whom 6 married:

John 1842-1911 m. CF Morris 1865
Richard 1844-1853
Mary Eliza 1845-1888 m. Henry Selah Smith 6 Jan 1867
Thomas 1849-1865 (“Civil War casualty”)
William Malay 1851-1913 m. Matilda Bevelhymer 1875
Frances Emma 1853-d.“before 1882” m. WE Chippy? 1873
Henry Harris Jan 1855-1893 m. Mary Bevelhymer 1881
Margaret Jane 1857?-d.“after 1882” m. ? Cook
Charles 1859-1861
Elfrida 1861- 1863

It appears that after John’s death Mary Jane remarried twice, finally to Elisha Green on 16 Oct 1884 (IGI).

I don't really know anything about William’s sons Francis Glen and Arthur Babe, and would be very interested in anything you could pass on. You also mentioned earlier that you had photos of William and Francis – I would love to have a look if you are happy to share.

The above information on John Cavendish and his family after he arrived in Ohio, apparently in 1839, has come mostly from research done by Steve Smith and his father Harold (descendants of John’s daughter Mary Elizabeth b.6 Dec 1845), and by their cousin, John ‘Jack’ Cavendish (a son of William’s son Charles Henry, I think) which Steve has been kind enough to share with me. Census details were provided by BB visitor Judy C. I haven’t checked any sources apart from the IGI and 1880 census.

I am still hoping to build up a bigger picture of what happened to John and his descendants after he left the IOM, but I'm beginning to get the impression that this one person started a huge Cavendish tribe in Ohio!

Best wishes

Sylvia
