I'm currently trying to use records from the latter half of the 17th century to trace a family line back (specifically by combining information from the Liber Vast, Liber Assed and Composition Books for Michael across this period) and have come across a couple of less well documented sources which might be of use to me. Can anyone confirm whether these sources are still in existence and if so what sort of information they are likely to contain ?
1) At the end of the Liber Assed for 1676 (for example) there is a section (plausibly) headed Liber Scacar. The first entry describes a fine of 6d to Hen Woods for (as best as I can make out) "disobedience in the spoil of his ponys". Robt Cannell and his wife (my putative ancestors) are also given a fine for the like. I speculate that this information was extracted from "Libri Scaccarii, or Exchequer Books, containing judgments on breaches of penal statutes, appeals from the Spiritual Court, &c. (abreviated Lib Scacc) - dates (1580-1847)" [This extract from MNB quoting A W Moore.] Can anyone tell me any more about Liber Scaccarii ?
2) There don't appear to be many early (pre 1690) property deeds in the indexes. On the other hand many seem to have existed (I counted references to 16 distinct "bills of sayle confirmed by the officers" in the LIber Vast for Michael between 1674 and 1683 inclusive). I don't have easy access to the original Liber Vast or the microfilm of it (I've been working from images of the microfilm) but my recollection is that the microfilmed record of each early year of Liber Vast was preceded or followed by a significant number of images of manuscripts consistent with property deeds. I'm wondering whether (at least some) of the original 17th century property deeds are still available - held as loose documents in the Liber Vast books. Am I being too optimistic ?
