Re: Frances Kermode

Hello Joan,
I have been able to access the shipping records for Fanny Kermode, They don't reveal much information. Name Fanny Kermode, arrival in New York 14 Apr 1873, birth year abt 1843, age 30, gender female, Ethnicity/ race/nationality English, place of origin England, Port of departure Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland, Ship /Spain. Liverpool seems to be the usual port of departure for those travelling to America and Australia. My g grandpartents Samuel Kermode and Maggie Todd left for Australia from Liverpool in 1882 on the Samuel Plimsoll.
Looking at the image of the passenger list - it appears that everyone is listed as English except for a few Germans and Italians. It may well be that the American Immigration agents considered those from the IOM as English. Fanny is close in age to Frances (born 1841) but too young to be Frances Ellen, the daughter of Thomas Kermode and Ellen Cottier (born Liverpool 1853). I do know there were a lot of Manx people living in Liverpool during this period.
The passenger list is the first American immigration record that I have viewed. I am more familiar with the Australian records where there is more information. Our records come in two parts, the one that is on Ancestry and second record that gives more detail. I usually view these at the Archives or State Library. I wonder if there are more detailed records in New York.
So many Frances Kermodes in the family does complicate matters.
Thank you for your help in sorting them out for me
Regards Denise
