As I eagerly red the lates copy of the IOM Family History Journal, on page 32, I saw the name Frances Kermode, aged 29 in 1867. Was it my ggg Aunt Frances? The age was close although not quite a match. Sadly it was not, she disappears from the records after the 1861 census when she was living with her mother (Frances Kermode nee Mickleby) at. 24 Great Nelson St Onchan. She was unmarried in 1861 and single. I have been unable to find either a marriage or a death for this Frances Kermode b 1841. The 1861 Census image seems to say that she was a 'plain sewer' although that was unclear. Frances in the IOMFHS jouranl was described as a good needlewoman so I held out some hope.
Subsequent Census reports show two women by the name of France Kermode but neither of them are my Aunt. The first was Frances Creer, who married William Karra Kermode, she was buried at Braddan 8 Jan 1916, her will is in the Library. The other would appear to be the woman referred to in the magazine and I thought the information may be of use to other researchers. She was Frances Callow, married to James Kermode 15 Oct 1857 at Kirk Braddan. It would appear she is the Frances Kermode who appears in the 1861 census as the wife of James Kermode, in 1871 she appears in the Ghofellan General Lunatic Asylum as the widow of a carpenter (I can't explain this) by 1871 she is still in the asylum but is now listed as the wife of a butcher (James was a butcher). In 1891 she appears again Frances Kermode Widow age 53 Seamstress Widow 53 living with Samuel Son, a Butcher. I hope this information is of interest to someone. Any suggestions regarding my ggg Aunt Frances daughter of John and Frances Kermode would be appreciated.
