Re: Elinor JOUGHIN & Thomas Tear

Sorry not to be able to give a definite answer. I looked back through my notes of the Joughin baptisms at Maughold for an Ellen/Ellinor etc. covering the period for her to have been of childbearing age in 1837, but found none. As the groom came from Bride I looked there too, but with the same result. In fact the only possibility in the whole island is Ellinor Joughin, daughter of William Joughin and Margaret Cain, baptised at Andreas 1813 Aug 8, from the Andreas main line of Joughins. As yet I have no subsequent history for her. There being no other candidate, we will have to go with her. In case they shed any light on it, the witnesses were Evan Callow and Thomas Cowell.

When noting the Bride Joughin baptisms I didn’t pick up the 1813 baptism that Sue quotes, but I did pick up:
1839 May 20: Daniel, son of Thomas Teare (Physic) and Ellen Joughin.
Perhaps the Rector of Bride, or the Parish Clerk, wrote the wrong maiden name in the register in 1837. If anyone has access to the film of Bride baptisms, a look at that date should confirm.

The Physic label is worth following up. The Teares of Ballawhane, Andreas were “witch doctors” in earlier generations, according to Robert Evans Creer the recently published artist, and MDs in later generations. The Thomas Teare from that family who almost fits is Thomas Murray Teare, MD (1802-70), but he married my distant relation Esther Allen in 1837 at Andreas. Can this family be found in the censuses?
