After a very long time agonising I have come to the conclusion that the best translation for Balla is steading which would appear to change its emphasis as each grew and prospered (Ballaugh, Ballasalla) others remained as smaller units, the natural inclination would be to call the house by the name of the whole property. I expect to be shot down in flames over this contribution but if it leads to a conclusion OK
