You misunderstood what I meant by the incorrect transcription. I was not referring to the name on the marriage cert, but how it was read by the friend who "stumbled across it" - I suggested that the friend might have been attempting to read an old photocopy of the marriage record, and misread the name Cohen as being Cole or Coles.

I also suggested that Cohen was entered by the clerk phonetically after speaking to the unknown (to him) wife-to-be, when her name might have been Cowen or another common IOM surname, and not deliberately changed. All theory, of course.
