The James Callow who was buried in Maughold aged 64 on 1 Aug 1852, was recorded as from Ramsey. There were two James Callows of Ramsey of about that age at that time. The one who died in 1852 appears to be the one aged 63 in the 1851 census whose wife was Isabella aged 54. They were living in King St. Ramsey, and he was a proprietor of houses. Living with him were his niece Catharine Quayle aged 22, unm., dressmaker, and a servant. All b. Maughold.
The niece could be a clue to his identity, but this looks like the James who was bapt. in Ramsey 4 May 1788 the son of James Callow & Esther Lord.
The entry in King St immediately before this household was [his son?] James Callow Junr, Head, Mar., 33, Joiner & Master employing 14 men, b.Ramsey.
The other Jas [James] Callow in 1851 near his age was the one Shan posted: James Callow widr 60 ropemaker b.Ramsey, and family. This looks like the one Joan was looking for.
Possibly bapt 4 July 1789 Ramsey, the illegitimate son of Margt Callow.
However, to muddy the water, there is a Maughold burial for James CALLOW, 84 yrs, King St, Ramsey, on Jul 20 1871, who also looks like Isabella's husband, the proprietor of houses. The 1861 and 1871 censuses will show which James Callow was still living then, and I'll look tomorrow (nearly midnight here) unless someone else finds them in the meantime.
Donna, are there Maughold MIs by any chance for the two James Callows buried 1 Aug 1852 and July 20 1871? Thanks!
Sue
