Yes Frances you are correct, I was making the classic mistake of treating the Isle of Man as if it was Douglas. Douglas, with the boarding houses etc did expand, as did Laxey for a period within the time period concerned. I myself have on several occasions explained why there was so much emigration during the 19th C. Rural areas, which used to represent the majority of the population did lose a lot of people some of whom moved to the Douglas/Onchan area, some of whom disappeared to Lancashire or further afield e.g. Australia
