I'd already contacted the owner of the Ancestry tree whose ancestor was a sibling of the Ellen Jones who married John Kermode b 1853 in Christchurch, New Zealand, Nov 16th 1889. (the couple with the impressive headstone) He's sent for the marriage certificate of John Kermode and Ellen Jones, and it confirms that John's father was Edward Kermode, and his mother was Elizabeth Kermode nee Quaggan.

So it's all come together nicely, and now he can research Edward Kermode's family, and Elizabeth's Quaggin family, with the help of your MIs, Donna. I think that this has whetted his appetite.
