The idea of an inscription being found is new to me, but you might be interested to read a translation of the saga of Erik the Red - in the Vinlanda Sagas - about the time of the settlement of Greenland and how they ended up on a further coast lined with trees and vines, inhabited by 'Skraelings'. They made a temporary settlement there but didn't thrive.
