Strangely enough someone quoted Bill Bryson in the paper today: "Shakespeare never spelled his name the same way twice in any of his surviving six signatures, even employing two spellings on a single document. Curiously the one spelling Shakespeare himself didn’t appear to use was 'Shakespeare'."
- Which is to say, yes, names were frequently spelt differently in various documents, and still are.
