I certainly will keep you 'posted' re any developments. The names (both male and female) I feel are one give away that the two families are linked, but there is also the fact that they keep appearing in the same streets in various censuses - I will get to the bottom of it sooner or later.

And yes - the sudden revelatory discovery of a second Gladys Starkey made so much sense of everything I had found, and grew up knowing!
