Frances was right to mention Dr. Broderick's work - he has done a long job of looking at every deed, mortgage, marriage settlement to extract from them the place-names. I wonder if his working notes contain any personal details or just the reference and the place-names.
I am due to meet up with him to work on Douglas placenames so I will ask him about his notes.
The mortgages are very useful because they will provide the wife's name for a land-holder even where the farm or town property was not sold.
I think a register of marriage contracts to which extracts could be added would be useful, because they crop up in various places. There were some good examples in Jim Roscow's paper in the Antiquarian Proceedings.
