THE REV. J. HUGHES-GAMES, D.C.L.

Principal of King William's College 1866-1886 (also Principal of Bp Wilson's Training College 1879), then appointed Rector of Andreas and Archdeacon of Man 21 May 1886, resigned Jan 1895 and moved to be Vicar of Holy Trinity, Hull where he died 25 March 1904, his widow moved back to the Island. Gelling describes his appointment at Andreas as being a disappointment to those who had hoped for a Manxman to be appointed but that Hughes-Games was a good choice - a profound, logical and very evangelistic preacher whose personal integrity won him the respect of the whole diocese.
Whilst at KWC he improved the science teaching, opening new chemistry laboratories etc - he also saw a revival of the school's fortunes; the school also started to excel in the open competitions for the armed services which were by examination. However in his speech of 1882 he acknowledged that 'the developments of the last twenty five years[of education on the Island] had been for the rich against the poor'.
