[From Manx Quarterly, #11 Oct 1912]

A FOREWORD.

THE establishment of a Hospital for the Isle of Man is due to certain benevolent ladies of the town and neighbourhood of Douglas. Feeling deeply for the distress of the poor in times of sickness, these ladies, about the year 1849, raised, by means of a public sale of ladies' fancy work, a sum of £300. This movement on the part of the ladies directed the attention of the townspeople generally to the need of such an Institution; and a public meeting of the inhabitants of Douglas was held at the Court-House on 27th September, 1849. At this meeting it was resolved that a General Hospital and Dispensary should be established in some suitable situation in Douglas, or its vicinity, for the relief of the sick poor throughout the Isle of Man.

It was also resolved to purchase the house in Fort-street, which had been reported upon as suitable by a Medical Committee. The Hospital in Fort-street was opened in September. 1850, and for 38 years the work of alleviating suffering was carried on there.

In time, with the, increasing demands upon the Institution, and the greater appreciation of its work, the building in Fort-street was found to be altogether too small, and the necessity for a new site and premises was forced upon the Committee.

They were faced with the, difficulty of the want of funds, until the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bloom Noble came forward and generously presented the site adjoining Crellin's Hill, and also erected the building at present known as, "Noble's Hospital."

This was opened on the 4th September, 1888, and the good work, commenced in Fort-street, continued.

After some years it became evident that even these premises were inadequate. Mr. Noble recognised this by bequeathing in his will a large sum for alterations and extensions.

When, however, the Committee looked carefully into the question, and consulted the medical and building experts, it was found to be impossible to satisfactorily alter the present building so as to bring it up to the standard of an up-to-date modern hospital.

Mr. Noble's Trustees were accordingly approached. After giving the matter their careful consideration, they presented the site on the Hills' Estate, and gave the Committee a sum sufficient to build, furnish, and equip thereon the Hospital now being opened, which it is confidently expected will satisfy the most exacting requirements of modern science.

The Trustees also decided to endow the Hospital with a sum of Twenty Thousand Pounds.

Hymn "Thine arm, O Lord, in Days of Old."

" They . . . brought unto Him all that, were diseased . . . and as many as touched were made perfectly whole."
St. Matthew xiv., 35-36.

THINE arm, O Lord, in days of old,
Was strong, to heal and save;
It triumphed o'er disease and death,
O'er darkness and the grave.
To, Thee they went, the blind, the dumb,
The palsied and the lame,
The leper with his tainted life,
The sick with fevered frame.
And lo ! Thy touch brought life and health,
Gave speech, and strength, and right;
And youth renewed, and frenzy calmed
Owned Thee. the Lord of light
And now, O Lord, be near to bluss,
Almighty as of yore,
In crowded ward, by restless couch,
As by Gennesareth's, shore.
Be Thou our great Deliverer still,
Thon Lord of life and,death ;
Restore and quicken, soothe and bless,
With Thine almighty breath
To, hands that work, and eyes that see,
Give wisdom's heavenly lore,
That whole and sick, and weak and strong,
May praise Thee evermore. Amen.

The 23rd Psalm will be read, by the Rev. D. Oakley.

DESCRIPTION OF NEW HOSPITAL.

THE New Hospital has been erected on an excellent site, portion of the Hills' Estate, having an area of over three acres, situate on the -northern side of Westmoreland-road. It is enclosed by stone walling, treated in an ornamental manner along the road frontage, with massive piers and three pairs of oak entrance gates. The first gates give access to the Administrative Department and the Nurses' Home. The second, together with a side door, is for Patients; and the third for delivery of coals and access to the Mortuary Buildings, The site commands extensive views over the Braddan Valley and the mountain ranges, and has a considerable inclination towards the West.

To accommodate the buildings to the levels of the ground, the roadway from the Patients' Entrance dips down slightly to the lower or ground floor, and that to the Administrative Department rises to an intermediate floor level connected with the half landing to the main stairway.The entrance to the Out-Patients' Department is on the right of the central roadway, under a. glazed porch, giving access to the Waiting Hall, a large, well-lighted apartment. Opening out at the road end are Consulting and Examination Romns, with Surgery adjoining; and at the other end are Dentists' operating and recovery rooms; and also the Dispensary, which serves for both out and in patients.

A short passage way leads to the main corridor, a noble arrangement, eight feet wide, running from end to end of the building, a length of about 175 feet.Centrally placed on the southern side is an electrically actuated passenger lift up to the first floor and down to the basement.On either side of the lift tower are balconies, and then come pavilions for male and female surgical cases, each with a large ward with beds for ten patients, a single bed ward, duty room, bath, conveniences, linen store, etc. There are also day rooms, and rooms for Ward Superintendents, or Sisters.

On the northern side of main corridor, towards the western end, is the X-Ray Department, consisting of a compartment for treatment, another for diagnosis, and a third as photographic dark room. This department has been fitted up in a most complete manner with the latest appliances under the advice and directions of Dr. E. Hall-Edwards, in consultation with Dr. Pantin. A branch corridor, connecting also with the X-Ray Department, leads to, the Operating Room, well-lighted from the north-west, with Sterilizing Room one side, and a room for administering anæsthetics and for recovery on they other.

Another branch corridor, towards the eastern end of main corridor, gives access to a small one-storey pavilion, providing two single bed wards. Here also are duty room, bath, and conveniences for isolation purposes.

The Administration Department is further eastward, and provides, on the ground floor, Kitchen Department and Service Rooms, Stores, Porter's Room, Dining Rooms for Matron, House Surgeon, Nurses, and servants, and also a Day Room for Nurses.

On the first, floor are the Board-room, together with Sitting and Bedrooms for Matron and House, Surgeon, Matron's Office and Stores, and Linen and Sewing Rooms.

On the two floors above are sleeping apartments for nurses and servants, box rooms, bath, conveniences, etc.

The Ward Pavilions provide, on the first floor, accommodation for male and female medical cases, and for children. The total number of Beds for Patients is fifty-seven.

The buildings are constructed of local stone walling, lined throughout with brick, finished externally roughcast, and plastered internally with glazed tile dados to all bath-rooms, sanitary conveniences, the out-patients' and kitchen departments, and throughout to the operating room.

The roofs are covered with Westmoreland green slating. All the sanitary fittings are of special design, supplied by Messrs. Morrison & Ingram, of Manchester; hot and cold water arrangements are laid on throughout; and all parts of the buildings are heated by hot water, in addition to open fires in the wards and principal rooms, the boilers being located in the basement, where there are coal and other stores and pipe ducts.The floors of the Out-patients, Operating, X-Ray, and Kitchen Departments, as well as of all corridors and staircases, are laid with marble terrazzo on concrete; and of all wards and rooms generally with polished maple boarding, in narrow widths, tongued and grooved.

An Electric Generating Station is provided for supplying current for lighting the buildings throughout, as well as for working the lift and for the X-Ray requirements. Gas is also laid on for supplementary lighting, and will be employed for cooking purposes.A Pathological Room is provided, also Mortuary, Post-mortem Room, and space for garden tools, etc., in detached buildings, together with the Electric Generating Station.

The grounds have been laid out to form a terrace walk on the southern side of and with pathways around the buildings; and, later on, it is hoped to plant shrubs and trees, form lawns, flower and kitchen garden.

Mr. Mark Carine, the building contractor, of Douglas, has carried out the works from designs by William Henman, F.R.I.B.A., specialist in hospital design and construction. Mr. J. H. Cubbon, of Douglas, executed the plumbing and hot water works; Mr. A. Whitehead, of Leeds, supplied the wall tiling; Messrs Baxter & Impey, the electrical plant; and Messrs. Smith, Major, & Stevens, the lift. Mr. J. E. Douglas acted as clerk of the works.We have the authority of the architect for saying that the works have been carried out in an admirable manner, and that he has been gratified at the interest and ability displayed by the foremen and workmen, the majority of whom are native to the Island.
