James McCarrey, born Sept. 21, 1799, and Catherine Crane, born July 5, 1793, Malew married in 1824 at Malew. James is found (as James Cowin in IGI) in the Kirk Malew parish register as christened on the 30 Sep 1799 the illegitimate son of John McCary and Isable Cowin (Register entry reads "30 Sep James (illegit) son of John McCary & Isable Cowin").

1841 census shows James + Catherine + son William 8 in Lhegy dhoo, German, living next to Henry and Margaret McCarrey and their 4 children - Daniel 24, Henry 17, Edward 14 and Mary 10 all of whom were born in Ireland - his occupation was agricultural labourer.

Family plus a Jane (age 25) & John (age 21) emigrated on the Emblem in 1849 - James's occupation given as farmer.

Son James reported as born Feb. 12, 1832 in Peel, is reported as arriving in Utah Sept. 3, 1868 though not found in census, unless confused with William.
