Primitive Methodist Local Preachers
1824-1855
Note these names are mostly taken from circuit
plans - three early plans are preserved in the Manx Museum
1824 - (a copy of original issued as a souvenir) probably the 1st
such PM plan
1841 - Isle of Man circuit July/Oct 1841 - covers whole Island
[MM MLP43]
1855 - Douglas Circuit July/Oct 1855 - covers the southside [MM
E240]
unfortunately no plan for Ramsey Circuit post 1841 exists until
1861(not yet examined)
Entries under Notes:
year n (do) place = entry on plan for year, n = number on plan
(measure of 'status' of LP generally the smaller the numbr ('higher'
on plan) the more years the LP has served as a LP); *= 'on trial' and
'x' = exhorter,
(do) indicates that Douglas/Castletown section (1855 only)
place = Chapel at which the LP belongs to some class
c18x1 = census entry for 1841 or 1851
other comments are from LP minute books etc.
It is possible that a couple of the nominally distinct entries
refer to the same person but where geographic location or position on
the plan introduce any possibility of their being two separate
individuals I have not merged the entries.
One immediate difference from the Wesleyan LPs is the greater fraction of non-Manx
names - the Cornish & Cumberland miners who came over to establish Foxdale
and Laxey mining brought their Primitive Methodism with them.
Note also the presence of women on the plan - unknown in Wesleyan
Methodism on the Island.
