Point of Ayre

View c.1900

Designed by Robert Stevenson in 1815 but following delays due to financing it was first lit on 9 March 1818. It lies on a sandy common about 500m from the shore. The tower is 99ft tall (103ft above HW mark)

Point of Ayre 2

A second, 34ft, tower was built in 1891 close to high water mark as the shore shelves away very steeply and ships can come very close to land. The white portion was a 1950 extension (which also saw the tower moved 50m) to allow for the accretion of shingle moving the shore line.
