Map of IoM on half sheet taking place of a page but not numbered
The famous Dutch cartographer firm of Blaeu was founded by William Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638). On his death the business passed to his son Joan or Jan (1595/1673). Their first world atlas, 'Theatrum orbis terrarum', appeared in two volumes in 1635, and eventually expanded to twelve volumes. The maps of England and Wales first appeared in the 1645 edition, and they usually appear in volume IV or V. In only a few cases does Blaeu's name appear on the maps and no imprints are present. They are beautifully engraved, and the Isle of Man map is considerably clearer than the Speed map on which it is based.
The printing-house was damaged by fire in 1672 with the loss of most plates, but loose maps from some plates continued to be printed after that date.
The map was issued in Blaeu's atlases, with the text, taken from Camden's Britannia, on the back in Latin, French, German, Dutch and Spanish. Impressions of the map were also issued without text, both separately and bound in atlases.
The engraved title-page of the first (Latin) edition was used in all subsequent editions of the volume which included England, with the date in the imprint altered as required and with the title (in the appropriate language) printed from type on a label pasted over the central panel. Since the date in the imprint was not always altered for each reissue, the imprint date is not necessarily the date of actual issue.
