RESPECTING THE PROVIDING OF SHIPS, FOR THE SAFETY OF THE LAND OF MAN AGAINST THE AGGRESSIONS OF THE SCOTS. A.D. 1317.

 

 

THE King to his beloved and faithful John de Athy, keeper of his land of Man, greeting. Since we have committed to your charge the keeping of our land of Man to hold during our pleasure, so that ye answer to us at our Exchequer for the issues and proceeds thereof, as is fully set forth in our letters Patent to you so directed. We, earnestly desiring the safety of that land against the hostile attacks of our enemies and rebels the Scots, command you to provide three ships out of the issues of our land aforesaid, to victual them, and to provide a sufficient armament of warlike men, for the safety of the said land against the hostile attacks aforesaid. And with respect to the expenses which ye may assign for this purpose, we, when we know them, will cause a due allowance to be made to you in your account at our Exchequer. Witness the King at Northampton, 6th July. By the King himself.
