HONORIUS, ETC., TO ILLUSTRIOUS KING OF MAN. ANNO VII. EPIST. 76.
FOR this purpose Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, from whom thou owest to acknowledge the temporal power conceded to thee, has raised thee to the throne of the Kingdom, viz., that thou shouldst love the Churches and religious places, existing throughout thy Kingdom, and shouldst honour them, by stretching out the hand of thy bounty to them, freely and cheerfully, and by exhibiting other works of piety to them. Since then it has reached our ears that certain Churches of thy Kingdom, of all of which thou art the patron, are said not to possess free land, we beg, we advise, we exhort your highness, as earnestly as possible, since it appears every way unbecoming the said churches should be entirely free from a sufficient dower, to bountifully bestow upon each of them, at least thirty paces of land according to canonical sanction, in free alms, beyond the cemetery, upon any side thereof, for the building of habitations for the priests, that the same may be retained for thee, to implore the mercy of God, that it may be with thee whithersoever thou goest, and that he may grant thee his grace at this present, and glory in the world to come. Dated at the Lateran, the 13th of the Kalends of February,* in the seventh year 1223. |
