THE King, to the Venerable the Dean, of the venerable and Holy Church of York, and to all the holy brotherhood of the convent, Olave * by the grace of God King of the Islands,+ . . . diligently reflecting on the affection of your brotherly love, conveyed to us in the writings of your fraternity, we take into our consideration both the supplications of your community and the services of your fellowship, and although we are unable to render the thanks that we ought, nevertheless those that we can we labour incessantly to pay . . . In all charitable haste, therefore, for the honor of God and the dignity of our mother church, the diminution of which ye ought to strive against, we require that all occasion and delay being removed, ye labor to send us consecrated by the imposition of the hands of your archbishop, Nicholas our elect, without delay, otherwise, which God forbid, the mutual devotion of spiritual love, which by our decree addressed alike to the clergy and people, we promised to extend towards you, will perish forever without hope of recovery. Now let not the clamour or unjust complaints of madmen in any way disturb you who . . . . . . which appear to exist between us . . . . rather according to God or man . . . . but receive ye with honour our messengers, who will repeat to you nothing else but what they shall have heard from us, and when ye have received them, send them back to us, together with our bishop, without delay.
