J. W. HARTLEY.
3 May, 1917.
I regret that our investigations from this side into the Manx Flora have been hindered as to search in Ellan Vannin, though the material already secured is yielding good results. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the last Lichen foray which I am able to report (in which Messrs. J. A. Wheldon, F.L.S., A. Wilson, F.L.S., and J. Hunter joined me) is the comparison which has been possible to be drawn between the Manx rupestral marine Lichens and those of Howth, so fully and admirably described by Miss Knowles in 'The Maritime and Marine Lichens of Howth.'
The Manx sea cliffs and marine rocks exhibits clearly the stratification, and yield many of the species therein recorded, the more abundant plants being almost identical.
As might be expected from the greater length of our coast line and different rock formation, some species occur which were not recorded by Mrss Knowles for the Howth Peninsula.
I shall not at present attempt to give details from the list before me, reserving these until we can make the record as complete as possible.
I cannot conclude this note without an acknowledgment of our indebtedness for the excellent work of our friends, Messrs. Weldon, Wilson and Hunter, and for their keen enthusiasm in assisting us to carry out our objects.
