Whitehaven 31th May 1774
In the Harbour of Douglas the remarkable Insufficiency of the Original Works will from time to time occasion more Repairs than were at first apprehended. In the Month of March last a considerable part of the upper Quay having sunk Several Feet, owong to its being founded on Loose Ground it hath been taken down, the Foundation laid Deeper & Secured with a Frame of Timber, & the Quay rebuilt in a Sufficient manner.
That part of the inner Wall of the Pier mentioned in Last Years State hath been taken down, the Bank of Gravel gathered there removed the Foundation lowered, and the Harbour in that part cleared & Deepined near three feet, so that Vessels of Three Hundred Tons Burthen may now Moor there at Ordinary Tides, and the Sharpest Vessels rest against the Pier before they take [the] Ground, which will be found a very Considerable Benefit to the Harbour.
At Peel the Securing the Mole by a Frame of Timber mentioned in last years State, is finished, and found to produce the good effect proposed by it.
At Ramsay Darby haven and Castletown such breaches as occasionally happen in the Course of the Year have been duly repaired and the Works in these Harbours kept in good Condition.
Annexed hereunto, is the Annual Account of the Produce of the Harbour Funds, and of the Expence of the Repairs above mentioned & other Incidents Persuant to the Directions of the Statutes.
