War Office 14th March 1772
His Majesty having been pleased to direct that the present Establishment of the 42d (or Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, consisting of 2 Serjeants, 3 Corporals, 1 Drummer and 38 private Men in each Company, besides the usual Commissioned Officers, should commence and take place from the 1st day of September last inclusive; and there being four Companies of the said Regiment now on Service in the Isle of Man, and on the British Establishment, Great Britain making good the Difference between British and Irish Pay, I am to acquaint you therewith for the information of the Right Honble the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, Enclosed I send you an Estimate of the Pay of the said four Companies for the period above mentioned. A year later saw the Troop numbers on Island reduced to three companies, the capacity of the Castle Rushen Barracks - there had originally been 9 companies on Island at the time of Revestment.
