I defend doing myself the honor of acknowledging the receipt of your favor till the return of the [].
The Troops from Ireland arrived the 26th & are encamped near Douglas from whence as it is near the Centre of the Island Detachments can be readily sent as the Service may upon an emergency require.
His Majesty's Commission appointing me pro tempore Receiver General & Collector of the Revenues of this Island did not received till Saturday at last at Douglas, with which immediately waited upon the Governor who desired me to attend him this morning, & have accordingly been sworn into Office agreeable to the forms of this place a duplicate of which I send inclosed as I am now authorized to employ only those of the late Proprietor's Officers who appear most deserving. I hope their Lordships will approve my appointing three of the Officers brought with me to act as Collectors of the Duties now due to his Majesty at Douglas, Ramsey & Derby Haven. Mr Savage who before received them at Peil [sic Peel], being but very lately admitted & having shown upon all occasions since the Officers came here an inclination to assist his Majesty's Service I shall continue in his former station but the others who acted at the places before mentioned Ports having been & are now greatly concerned in the illicit trade from this Island I esteem them very improper for that service.
The Governor has appointed the 11th Inst for reading
the Proclamation & taking possession in form of the Island, the Natives
seem more satisfied but unwilling to suffer the troops to be billeted upon them.
The good effects of their being here will I hope soon appear by putting an effectual
Stop to the Smuggling of any part of the Goods now upon the Island of which
as mentioned my former letters there are large quantitys.
You'll please inform their Lordships I shall immediately [] the [] & the
end of the Quarter send an account of the Receipt from the 17th May last till
that time & shall endeavour to execute the directions sent me in such a
manner as I hope may merit their Lordships approbation.
Your etc Chas Lutwidge
Castletown in the Isle of Man 1st July 1765
