An enquest taken at the Castell before John of Fasakerley Roger of Aghton and Roger of Hulton by the othes of John Porter John Fleccher Gibon McQwaykin Symond Molynux John Torver Richard of Loncaster Thomas Haysnap John Blyth Richard of Frodsam William the Brewer William Skynner Thomas of Aghton Richard Hugynson and Richard of Daleston And so we sayn by the othe that we haue made to god and to oure lord Sir John of Stanley

that John the Porter from Halhalday [All Hallows day - 1st Nov] unto Candellmas day [2nd Feb] in all the winter season that he or his son watches from the time that the watch bell begins to ring unto the time that the first supper be done in the hall The enquest says he ought to do so

And also as tochyng the Hawkhows and the Brewhows we fynd home noght able for hit raynes in in dyuers places The Receyuor sais not in his defaut and that he puttes to enquest The enquest says gylty that time that the presentment was . made bot now thai fynd that thai ar sufficiently made The lagh is aboff wreten for the statutes brekyng

And also as touching the Hawkhouse and the Brewhouse we find some not suitable for it rains in in diverse places The Receiver says not his fault and that he pleads not guilty. The enquest says guilty at the time that the presentment was made but now they find that they are sufficiently made The law is above written for the statutes breking

And also we fynden that the Mothall is noght able bot fawty in mony places for bot if hit be mendit by tyme hit will don in hast The Receyuor says hit was unable and therfore he toke hit don and be gan to make a newe and noght un able in his defaute and that he puttes to enquest The enquest sais the Receyuor is not gilty

And also we find that the Mothall [Motte Hall ?] is not suitable but faulty in many places for but if it be mended by time it will [be] done in haste The Receiver says it was unusable and therefore he took it down and began to make anew and not his fault and that he pleads not guilty The enquest says the Receiver is not guilty

And also we fynden mysgouernaunce a mong officers that is to wete by twene the Constable and John Porter where the said Constable strok the said porter in the gate hows The constable unswares and knawlage and puttes hym to my lordes grace

And also we fynd mysgouernaunce in mong officers that is to wete the Receyuor the Constable the Countroll and the Clerk of the Rolles for ther is grete hurling and debate a mong home and all of pride and statlynes and that will not lete home drawe all on way and in especiall we fynd the Controll in defaut the Receyuor sais not long on hym and that he puttes to enquest the Constable sais not long on hym and he puttes to enquest The Countroll sais not long on hym and he puttes to enquest the Clerk of the Rolles sais not long on hym and that he puttes to enquest The enquest sais the Controll is gilty and all the todir clere

And also we find misgovernance among officers that is to wit between the Constable and John Porter where the said Constable struck the said porter in the gate house The constable answers and acknowledges and puts himself to my lordes grace

And also we find misgovernance among officers that is to wit the Receiver the Constable the Controller and the Clerk of the Rolls for there is great hurling and debate among them and all of pride and stateliness and that will not let them draw all one way [pull together] and in especiall we find the Controller in fault, the Receiver says not [be]long on him [does not apply to him] and that he pleads not guilty the Constable says does not apply to him and that he pleads not guilty The Controller says does not apply to him and that he pleads not guilty the Clerk of the Rolls says does not apply to him and that he pleads not guilty The enquest says the Controller is guilty and all the other clear

And also we fynd mysgouernaunce in the Constable office in oponyng and tynyng of the gates both.,erly and late in undew tyme and specialy in the wynter tyme The Constable sais he putts hym to enquest The enquest says gylty

And also we find misgovernance in the Constable's office in opening and tying of the gates both early and late in undue time and specially in the winter time The Constable pleads not guilty The enquest says guilty

And also we fynden that wemen comen in syn the tyme that ye come in to the Contre hit is trewe

And also we find that women come in since the time that you came into the Country, it is true

And also we fynden the gate hows towre fawty and the whete gerner the milne towre and Saynt Kat'yn towre and the leutenant chaumbre and the hall for hit raynes in to ich on of thes and rotes the tymbre the Receyuor sais not in his defaut and that he puttes to enquest The enquest sais fore alsmych as Nicholas the plumer was in Man and the Receyuor gaf hym leve to goo and knew the derauts of the towres the Receyuor is gilty

And also we find the gate house tower faulty and the wheat gerner[store] the mill tower and Saint Kathryn tower and the leutenant's chamber and the hall, for it rains in to each on of these and rots the timber the Receiver says not in his fault and that he pleads not guilty The enquest says forasmuch as Nicholas the plumber was in Man and the Receiver gave him leave to go and knew the faults of the towers the Receiver is guilty

And also we fynden that the Mynhows is ryght dissolawable for ther is both the wall and the roff ryght fawty The Receyuor says not long on hym and that he puttes to enquest the enquest says not gilty,

And also we find that the Mill house is right disallowable for there is both the wall and the roof right faulty The Receiverr says not [be]long on him and that he pleads not guilty the enquest says not guilty,

And also we fynden that the grete hows of.my lordes that the Constable dwelles in was made in the most costwys tyme of the yere fore hit cost mych siluer and mych more thyng went therto and mych more spence then us thought hit nede have bene and so mych hast was made at the Receyuor and the Constable made on Finlo the mason to dragh don the walles of the mothall and take oute the lyme and stop and make hit agayn wyth hors dong and haye

And also we find that the great house of my lord's that the Constable dwells in was made in the most costwise time of the year for it cost much silver and much more thing went thereto and much more expense then we thought it need have been and so much as was made at the Receiver, and the Constable made one Finlo the mason to drag down the walls of the motte hall and take out the lime and stop and make it again wyth horse dung and hay

Also thai sayn that the Controll did not his office on sounday at the Castell as was the charge is for the stewart was Absent in the Contre about vitaill and all his officers where redy to have geven in the howshold and he wold not take hit by cause that the stewart was absent the Countroll says not long on hyme and that he puttes to enquest The enquest sais the Countroll is gilty the lagh is a bowf wretyn for the statutes brekyng

Also they say that the Controller did not his office on sunday at the Castle as was the charge is, for the steward was absent in the Country about victuals and all his officers were ready to have given in the household and he would not take it because that the steward was absent the Controller says not [be]long on [apply to ?] him and that he pleads not guilty The enquest says the Controller is guilty, the law is above written for the statutes breaking

Respect Holcroft in Angl'

Also we fynd that Thurstan of Holcroft toke a cowpull of Shrode and j staye of the Spynnas oute of gate hows and also he the toke the boltes and the chenes of Irne frome the syde of the Spynnas

Also we find that Thurstan of Holcroft took a couple of Shrode [shrouds = ropes ?] and 1 stay of the Spynnas [ ? possibly lifting bridge ] out of gatehouse and also he the took the bolts and the chains of Iron from the side of the Spynnas

Also we fynd that is to owre knawlage the Receyuor dose not his office as the appoyntment makes mension where he shuld at ich receyt take the mony that he receyues and put hit in to a bagge and the Leutenant sell hit and put hit in to the tegli wyth the bokes The receyuor unswares and knawlages and puttes hym in My Lordes grace the lagh of this poynt is as hit is abowf wreten

Also we find that is to our knowledge the Receiver does not his office, as the appointment makes mention, where he should at each receipt take the money that he receives and put it in to a bag and the Leutenant seals it and put it in to the tegli [? latin tego = to conceal] with the books The receiver answers and knowledges and puts him in My Lord's grace, the law of this point is as it is above written
