Sir
Having communicated to my Lords Commsnrs of the Admiralty your letter of the 20 inst transmitting the copy of one from Governor Smelt respecting several men employed in the Herring Fishery at the isle of Man who have been impressed and taken on board the Maria Tender. I have their Lordships Commands to send you herewith a Copy of a Letter from Lieut Hawkes of that Vessel upon this Subject and to acquaint you for the Information of Mr Secy Ryder that the conduct of the Inhabitants of that place has been so bad and the Men in question being strictly liable to the Impress their Lordships are of opinion that it would not be expedient to allow of their discharge and that unless the Fishermen of the Isle of Man shall furnish a supply of Men for the use of His Majesty's Navy as is the case in Shetland and other Places vizt one able Seaman for every Ten they must consider themselves as liable to be impressed.
I am commanded by the their Lordships further to acquaint you that the Sergeant and Six privates belonging to the Manx Volunteers also impressed on board the Maria Tender are ordered to be discharged it appearing that they have not used the sea.
I have &c J Barrow
not 100% certain of name as rendered Barrow in one place and Burrow(s) in others
