[From Governor's Letter Book Vol 2 ]

No. 56 Henry Goulbourne to Smelt 6 April 1811

Whitehall 6 April 1811

Sir

I am directed by Mr Secry Ryder to acknowlege the Receit of your Letter of the 29 Ulto detailing the circumstances which have followed the disbandment of the Manx Fencibles and the Measures to which you have found it necessary to resort for supplying the temporary deficiency of Troops and for maintaining the Tranquility of the Island.

In reply to which I have Mr Ryders directions to express his approbation of the Promptitude with which you have applied the Means within your Power to the Suppression of the disturbances at Ramsey, and to acquaint you that directions have been given to the Secretary at War to give pay for such part of the Volunteer Force in the Island as you have found it necessary to employ either in the ordinary Service of the Island or in the Suppression of Disturbance.

I am at the same Time to communicate to you that a detachment of Troops has been long under orders to proceed to the Isle of Man and as there is every reason to suppose that they must have already arrived there, it becomes unnecessary to give the direction of which you suggest the Propriety respecting the Accommodation of the Troops on their Arrival.

I am &c Henry Goulbourne
