WW1 Internee - Benno Lippchutz

The following is taken fromthe IoM Times 31 Aug 1918 :

Escaped Prisoner returns to Knockaloe

On August 8th, Benno Lippchutz., a German prisoner of war, made his escape from internment at the Knockaloe Detention Camp, and though the Island was searched high and low for him, no tidings of the escaped Hun were forthcoming until Thusday of this week, when he surrendered of his own free will to the guard at Knockaloe. Lippchutz declined to give any account of his movements and doingings during the three weeks which intervened between escape and surrender, but the Camp Authorities have a good idea that he spent most of his time in Douglas, and enjoyed his liberty to the full. It is conjectured that ere getting out of Camp, Lippchutz managed to secure a military uniform, which he wore by way of disguise the while he eluded the guard and remained in freedom. There is also good reason for concluding that he had in his possession a considerable sum of money - £75, so the story goes. When he returned to Camp on Thursday he was wearing a suit of civilian clothing, and was practically penniless. The authorities were considerably astonished when Lippschutz turned up, they having come to the conclusion that he had taken advantage of the crush at the steamers during Bank Holiday week to get away from the Island.
