Notes

This is the first box of loose papers in the HO 98 series dealing with the IoM - as the pages are unnumbered it is all too easy to lose the original sequence - the page number here is my suggested sequence, as well as some identifier. Some documents are enclosed with others - usually noted as [enc].

It is intended more as a finding aid than as full abstracts of each paper.

The dates are ISO standard format year month day;
the key persons are:
Lord Sidmouth
Henry Hobhouse - permanent Under Secretary of State at Home Office
James Clarke - Attorney General
Cornelius Smelt - appointed Lt Governor in 1805 - remained in post through to death in 1832
Duke of Atholl - 4th Duke, appointed Govr-in-Chief in 1793 - held post until death in 1830
