Shaw to Lord Grenville 5th January 1791
My Lord
I do myself the honour to inform your Lordship, that, after a journey and voyage rendered very tedious by the extreme inclemency of the weather and contrary winds, I arrived here thursday last, the 30th ulto; and that Colonel Dawson my very worthy Predecessor, intending to leave the Island in the course of tomorrow, it is intended I shall be sworn in the same day and to commence the duties of the office of Lieut Governor.
From the report of Colonel Dawson, but chiefly respecting the Partys in to which, I fear the Island is at present a good deal divided, the prospect before me, on this score, is not highly flattering. But as my intention is steadfastly to be of no Party, but as well as I can - treading in the footsteps of the late Lieut Governor, to do my duty faithfully, diligently, and impartially according to my own best judgement, and with such further aid as I can obtain and may rely on. I trust, my lord, I shall be able so to conduct myself as that your Lordship shall not be troubled with many complaints from me; nor founded of me.
I am &c Alex Shaw
