[From Atholl Papers - APX 30-2]

[Letter from Duke of Atholl to Gov Cochrane 30 January 1753]

London Coppey Lettr [from Duke of Atholl] to Gov Cochrane 30 Janry 1753

Sr Your letters No 2,3 and 4 come to hand, and a forth letter from you, I received by last post without a delay but by a letter inclosed to the Major, it is supposed to be the same date with his which is the 14th Inst.

Inclosed is a Presentation Signed to Mr Christian to be Vicar of Marown, as you did not mention his Christian name it is left blank, for you to fill up; Clarks Petition and cases relating to the Warren is received, and if called for shall sign the proper order upon it; I am very glad the Keys begins to see their own folly and at length have agreed to such laws as are for the good of the Isle.

Now the Parliament is meet and not one word mentioned relating to the sale of the Isle of Man or leasing the Customs, you can very safely contradict Sr James Lothers news, whos name I see is first in the letter from the Whitehaven Fishry Chamber, I think you are in the right to have made no demand upon them, hitherto, I shall take advice here upon their letter, and at the same time shew the answers drawn up to it in the Isle; I am glad to know by your last letter that Trade revives a little; I hope to be in Scotland about the same time you propose and will be very glad to meet with you there, then will be a very proper opertunity to bring along with you Scots Bank notes and all other Cash that can be collected by that time; I have appointed Mr Hamersley a noted soliciter here to be Clerk, or Register of Appeals from the Isle, that need to be heard here by the Solister General
