Sir
Your letter of the 29th of October I had three days agoe Inclosing Mr Hamersley's letter which is here returned That Gentlemen says he never had but one letter from me which is very true but it is as true that the Controller wrote him three letters by my Orders the first near three years ago. Non of which he ever answered and I employed the Controller to write because he knew better than I in the Law Terms to write - However I shall write him again when I arryve in the Island as I propose to sett off from Edinburgh the twentyth of this month and am afraid I shall not be able to wait upon my Lord Duke but will write to his Grace after I have seen Barron Maule and Capt Murrey. I went to Edinburgh about three weeks agoe and the day after gott a bad cold. Returned here to the Country amd have keept the house ever since, have been twice bled and taken a great manny things, am now greatly better I am &c
PS the fever and colds rages in this part few or non escapes
[note some punctuation added to ease reading in all 3 letters]
