This is at the instigation of "a friend of yours who lately came back from London" (presumably Deemster Crellin N.M.) who has assured the Keys that through interest there he can get any Bill passed. He has not yet obtained what he went for,and if you allow him to do so in any manner except obviously through you "you may as well give up your Government here,as his friends already boast that a new channel has been opened to the Throne which ought to be improved upon every occasion" |

Deemster Lace to Duke Although Lt.Gov.Shaw has been absent the government
has been carried on without inconvenience as Mr.M.H.Quayle,the Clerk of
the Rolls,has been using forms signed in blank by the Lt.Governor before he went away. But Mr. Quayle is now seriously ill, and as it is reported that the Lt.Gov. has retired the responsibility of the Governor now rests on the Duke,and it has never been known for the Island to be without a resident Governor of some kind. The General angered by his remarks from the Bench, has asked redress from Lord Hawkesbury who has ordered the Lt.Governor to hold an inquiry into the matter. As he cannot expect favourable treatment from the Lt. Gov "but quite the reverse" he asks for protection from the Duke. Otherwise the riotous stranger if allowed to upset the King's peace and the liberties of his subjects in this Island,as now attempted, and will be more and more if they succeed, as in the present manner,in harrassing the only man of a magistrate who exercises a nerve to suppress their outrages,and if I was removed or in any way degraded they might consider everything in the Island their own." |
