Observations by J.Stobie on the mountain land in the I.O.M. They contain about 21,000 acres of the finest pasturage suitable for the rearing of sheep. There are no foxes. The Duke receives no rents from them - due to the negligence and treachery of his former servants, who should have claimed it. The Seneschal has also allowed the making of 'intakes',for a payment to himself, which are in fact much bigger than they are said to be,and for which the Lord receives no rent,or at least an inadequate one.farmers holding land bordering on the hills should be bought out and their farms let to English farmers who would improve them and show the Islanders a good example of industry. With proper management the land, which at present yields nothing to the Duke, might be made to bring in near two thousand pounds a year. |
