Whitehaven Fishery Chamber to Wm. Murrey Sr, (Merchant, Douglas) Expreseing surprise at having received from the Water Bailiff a demand for fees to cover their busses fishing for herrings in St.George's Channel. To pay these would be to admit the right of the Lord of the Island to have dominion over part of H.M.'s high seas where they,as British subjects, have every right to fish. He,as their agent, must not make such payments and,if he has done so must inform them, He must also inform the Manx authorities that if any further such demands are made the matter will be taken up with the British government. |
AP_X28_2 | Abstract of the Manx laws and customs relating to the herring fishery... It is complained that the Whitehaven busses offend against these by :- Anchoring on the fishing grounds. Shooting their nets in the daytime, and on a Sunday. Fouling the fishing grounds by gutting the fish at sea and throwing them overboard, which frightens the fish away. Refusing to pay the dues which all other boats (including British and Irish) do. That they fish, not as they say in St. George's Channel, but within two or three leagues of the Manx coast. and sometimes nearer. If they really fish in St.George's Channel they may do so without molestation, but if they come nearer shore - where the Manx boats fish - they must comply with the Manx laws. | |

Gov.Cochrane to Duke."We have had of late a glorious time,a great many ships arrived with rum etc, and to my great surprize all our ships has escaped the enemy privateers that are now upon the seas". A recent decision of the Court of Chancery to the effect that all debts due to natives must be paid in full before any of those due to "Foreigners" has greatly alarmed the latter. As the greatest part of the trade of the Island is carried on by such gentlemen it will be necessary to revive an old custom and naturalise a number of them,so as to put them on an equality with the natives. He encloses AP_X28_21. |
