Gov. Wood to Duke. The merchants fear that a war with Spain will diminish imports. He reports,in answer to a question, that ever since his arrival he has "been treated with the greatest respect and complaisance, except by the Bar in the Court of Chancery, where the most unbecoming freedoms are not only afforded to one another, but even to the Judge himself! A remonstrance from him caused an improvement for a while, but recently an Irish attorney told me in avery insolent manner that I might give what decree I thought proper, but that he was not obliged to abide by it. I luckily preserved my temper till the Court was dismissed... then have him the severe reprimand his insolence deserved. In short it depends on the issue of Stevenson's affair to reduce these gentry to a proper obedience." |
