At the end of remarks he writes "the Agency has not kept me from having recourse to my own private fortune...My house has been more like tavern than a private residence,my horses and carriages have been twice worn out and twice renewed...and not in my service" while he was also out of pocket in other ways. A great drought in the Island has ruined crops and caused losses amongst stock so that farmers have been unable to pay the rents. |
