Remarks on the I.O.M. in 1818,by an Officer of the 56th. Regt.who spent some months there, After touching on the history of the Island, the Keys, and the natural products,he goes on to blame the poorness of the agriculture on the attractions of the herring fishery,in which with good fortune large returns may be secured with comparative ease, he finds the common people to be much addicted to drink, and to have an astonishing fondness for litigation which is cheap but,as is to be expected in a small community, not always productive of justice.. he finds the Manx uncommonly susceptible to kind attentions' and is convinced that if the Duke were to reside in the Island occasionally, learn a few words of the language and humour their little prejudices, he might do with them whatever he pleased. Being greatly attached to the Island they look on banishment from it as the greatest possible punishment. They regard capital punishment with the greatest horror, probably from fear of being haunted by those executed. He considers that party feeling against the Atholls is dying away. |

|
Observations on conditions in the Island before the Revestment. Covers clothing, agriculture.litigation, communications, etc;states that Quayle(?) the Proprietor's manager, who is universally detested, monopolizes everything and has amassed a fortune by dishonesty. The Bishop is not popular as he does little for the good of the country. The proprietor (i.e.Duke ? N.M.)should visit the country, where he could easily make himself popular, and lead the people to better things. This can only be done through affection, for they are too obstinate to be made to do anything new and too stupid to know what is for their good. (The author of this paper is not stated. N.M.) |
