Senhouse Wilson & others to Treasury. Complaining of the difficulty of stopping smuggling unless more and better Officers are appointed. Alleges that the subordinate Officers are drunken and untrustworthy,many of them being in collusion with the smugglers. Mentions the presence in Peel Bay of Kennedy Scott,in a lugger mounting eight guns,who has given out that he will kidnap and take to France any who may try to stop him landing his cargo and,furthermore,that he is now a match for the Revenue Cutter "Prince Edward" which he will sink,or at least kill the Captain of. Another notorious smuggler on the coast is one Yawkins in a cutter mounting four guns. |
