Bishop Murray to Duke suggests that a visit of the Duke to the Island "under the general depression which prevails" would be a great encouragement, particularly in view of a projected scheme for the establishment of a cod fishery. In view of the way in which his wishes for the good of the Island are thwarted in every way this may be asking rather much of the Duke, but as every property-holder in the Island would be interested in the success of the proposed venture it might be worth his attention. Experimental catches have shown prospects to be good, but the Bishop feels that unless the crews of the boats are under orders one day's good fishing would keep the crews at home for the next seven. He asks the Duke to give ground on the Parade at Castletown for an extension of the church, which is become too small to hold those who should attend,on the north side. Smallpox is very bad,and he hes had trouble with people "so far behind are they in civilization" who would bring bodies of those who had died from the disease into the churches during service. He had had to get aid from the Civil Powers before he could get this practice stopped. |
