|
Capt.S.Cable to Duke saying he has examined the Calf and is convinced it would be a very suitable place on which to put prisoners. He details the advantages and suggests methods for guarding them. If the 2,000 French prisoners now in Liverpool Gaol were brought across promptly they could live in a camp and be set to work building stone huts for themselves which should be ready by winter. There is plenty of good water, while as for food the responsibility for finding that could be thrown upon their own Agents, who could easily get food from Ireland. The best landing place is opposite Kitterland, and a small Guard House might be built there and a few light guns mounted. 20,000 prisoners could easily be accommodated and guards found from the Manx Fencibles. |

Mungo Murray to Duke thanking him for his appointment as a Lieutenant in the Fencibles, but pointing out that to do this duty properly he will have to be in Castletown and therefor have to appoint and pay a deputy to do his work at the Customs in Douglas. Probably the Duke did not realise this when he did him what he intended to be a good turn. The conduct of the Lt.Gov. (Shaw) under the influence of his Bearleader Heywood" with regard to the new Regt.has caused universal discontent,in particular the appointment as Captain of "Bob's (Heywood N.M.) son-in-law Thompson whose claim is not bettered by his having sold out of the Regulars, for reasons best known to himself. |
