[From Atholl Papers - AP 107(2nd) 20]
My Lord Duke I beg leave to lay before your Grace a copy of a Letter arrived from the Barrack Office of date the 8th Ult desiring me to be prepared to leave the Isle of Man by Lady Day next.
Should it meet your Graces approbation I beg leave to express a wish to have the superintendence myself of the improvements and public buildings to be erected here having made arrangements for that purpose in consequence of a letter from Lord Sidmouth which the Lieut Governor was pleased to send to me, stating that the improvements in the Castle and new Magazine were to be carried into execution, and that his Lordship saw no reason why I should not be imployed.
Colonel Bridges of the Engineers was here, and called on me to attend the Inspection of the several Forts in the Island, Castle &c. He very much approved of your Graces suggested improvements in the Castle as well as the situation for the new Magazine.
He also requested me to give him Plans & Estimates for erecting a Small Magazine, Guardroom and Battery at the Forts of Douglas, Castletown, Peel and Ramsey, which I understand is approved and ordered to be carried into execution this spring.
But should I be oblidged to leave this island it will br necessary I shall have time to make out a detailed specification and Description of the several works in the intended Improvements and buildings, otherwise it will be impossible for a Stranger to have the same completed agreeable to the Estimates made by me.
I also beg leave to inform your Grace that I have completed the Plans, Elevations, Sections, and detailed Estimates of the intended new Buildings at Bishops Court, and request to know whether I am to forward them to your Grace, or to the Rt Revd Lord Bishop.
I have the honour etc. Thos Brine
