[Appendix A(56) 1792 Report of Commissioners of Inquiry]
The EXAMINATION of JOHN QUAYLE, Esquire, Clerk of the Rolls, taken at Douglas, in the isle of Man, September 28, 179.
HIS Examinant saith, That prior to 1765 Wrecks upon the coast of this island of every denomination whatever, belonged to His Grace's family; that the denominations of Jetsam, Flotsam, and Ligan, made no distiction in the collection of Wrecks, as the Lord Proprietor was posssessed of all and every of them. He cannot tell time; but that subsequent to the year 1765 distinctions, with respect to the different of Jetsam, Flotsam, and Ligan, began to be made in this island
He knows of many instances subsequent to the year 1765, where Wrecks of Flotsam and Ligan have been taken possession of by the Crown, and even those thrown on shore and lying on dry ground, to a considerable amount,
JOHN QUAYLE,
Jno Spranger
Wm Osgoode,
Willm Roe.
David Reid.
