[Appendix A(39) 1792 Report of Commissioners of Inquiry]
The EXAMINATION of JOHN QUAYLE, Esquire, Clerk of the Rolls, taken; Douglas, in the Isle of Man, September 28th, 1791.
[Examined by His Grace the Duke of ATHOLL.]
THIS Examinant saith, That prior to the Revesting Act the right of Treasure Trove was in His Grace's family ; but since this act, has been claimed and possessed by the Crown; and refers to an order of the Court of Exchequer of this island in 1786. Upon a former occasion subsequent to the year 1765, a Treasure Trove, consisting of ancient coins, was demanded by the Receiver General from the Duke's Seneschal, who insisted that it was purely a manerial right. The Receiver General admitted this, but insisted that it was omitted in the exception of the Revesting Act, and therefore that it was under his care.
