T A Brew whose father was miller at Killane in early 20th century has left a detailed description in his 1950 Folk life survey. The mill dam was removed in the mid 1920's (along with that at the Lhen) as part of the improvements to the drainage of the curraghs - Brew writing in 1950 says the Killane then looked shabby and neglected. The mill was fed by the Killane trench.
Brew comments that "the building in front of the Killane Mill, near the water, was the pearl-barley mill. It was built after the original mill was put up - you can see it partly hides a window in the old building. The building attached to the back of the old mill is the kiln. This was an addition as all the kilns are in the island's mills, They didn't seem to have proper drying milns at the mills in the old days. They are an individual addition always".
