(44) Dog Mills - Glankilpatrick Mill or Mullen-e-Modda

From 1868 O/S Plan V.2 - SC 452978

Two Mills from 1809 however the 1827 plan, naming it as "Dog's Mill" shows a single mill in a different position, opposite a public house Parish boundaries usually follow a topographical feature - ? the stream running south of the road.

Extracted from UK NA MR 1/1239 "Warrens of the Parish of Lezayre"
Christian Black is indicated as owner of the land to the west of the road and William Monier to that on the east.

The Radcliffe's give a brief history of the mill which they state was built c.1715 by William Casement of the Kella, then a part owner of Garrett's Mill in Sulby at the bridge over the tiny stream that runs through Glion Keeill Pharick. Additional water was obtained by diverting an old watercourse that ran through the curragh beg eastwards to Grest. Tracking the legal flow of tranfers has been a tedious task with some loose ends still to be tidied up.

Wm Casement died in 1733 shortly after marrying his third wife - his will dated 7 May 1733;of the Kella;wife Dorothy als Humphrey (estate during life if she remains unmarried);son Ewan(to be kept at school till he gets to be a good english scholar),George;dau Esther(to be given sufficient learning + education till she is fit to go to service), Cath + Jane(had portions - 1s ea);witnesses Wm Henderson - wrote will, Ed Kissage (illiterate) - will disputed tho made 6wks before death;court makes Ewan,George,Elizth + Esther jt admrs - all under age except Eliz who with brothers-in-law Wm Crow + Jo Queelin declrd overseers;Wm Crow neglects to provide inventory & is threatened with prison; Ewan,George & Esther were children of his 2nd wife Mary - by his first wife Jane Wattleworth he had four daughters of whom 3 are mentioned Cath, Jane and Elizabeth. His first two daughters,Cath & Jane were baptised in Malew before his move to Lezayre where his 3rd daughter Elizabeth was baptised in March 1715 (the 4th Mary does not appear to have survived - her mother died in Nov 1718) - presumeably it is this move by 1715 that the Radcliffes used to date the Mill.

John Quillin [Queeling] married Wm Casement's eldest daughter Cathrine in 1731, another daughter Jane, married Wm Crow, son of Capt Charles Crow in 1732

NSS Oct 1749 25

Sale dated 27 Jul 1749; John Queeling(Castletown) + wife Cathrine als Casement sell for £10 to Robert Curlett + Charles Crow(both Lezayre) Glan Kill Parick Miln together with a parcel of qtrland in Bride of 3d rent (equally between both parties); witt Wm Curghey, John Gill (both Queelings sign; Court noted and reserved the one half of the Miln called Glankill Patrick miln belonging to the Lord of Man;

The background to thiis half share belonging to the Lord is still to be investigated.

The 4th Duke, inaccurately still claiming the title of Lord of Man, sold the Lords's half share, though with a conditional bond in case this sale was challenged in the courts.

CTD Eas 1802 16 sale
[also in Bride ]dated 18 Dec 1795;[confirmed 24 Aug 1799] John, Duke of Atholl, Lord of Mann and the Isles sells for £250(Brit) to John Corlet(Loughan Eyij, Lezayre) and Charles Crow(Lezayre) the one half of that water corn mill in Lezayre known as Carretts or Sulby Mill together with the one half of that water corn mill in Bride known as Glankilpatrick Mill or Mullen-e-Modda; Witt Thos Chisholm, James Campbell, Richd Clague
CTD Eas 1802 15 condl bond
dated 18 Dec 1795; John Duke of Atholl stands indebted to John Corlet(Loughan Eyij, Lezayre) and Charles Crow(Lezayre) for £500 but bond void if Corlett + Crow are suffered to remain in quiet and peaceable occupation of the 2 purchased mills [described in CTD Eas 1802 16] Witt John F Crellin

This sale by the Duke was the first appearance, albeit in Manx, of the name Dog Mill(s) for which no satisfactory explanation has been given.

The next located sale is NSS May 1823 30 Dan Lace (Cor) to Daniel Cowley but how Cowley acquired it is not yet clear, nor is it known to whom Kneale sold it

dated 23 Jun 1817; recites many executions agt Daniel Cowley(banker, Kk Bride) and the sale by public auction by Dan Lace(coroner) of the one half share of 2 corn mills + concerns known as the Dog Mills for £226 to John Kneale(Kk Bride) witt Wm Kewley, Henry Moore

The next located sale is also a Coroner's sale which is the original deed in a small cache of deeds that went through the court together: reg deed Oct 1850 21

dated 10 Mar 1828;Recites execution agt Wm Casement Corlett(dated Ramsey 15 Jan 1828) John Kelly(coroner) auctioned for £82 the one half of a corn mill called the Mullen-e-modda or the Dog Mill in the parish of Bride to Thomas Corlett(Lezayre); Witt Robert Cowin, John [] Christian

Thomas Corlett quickly disposed of his purchase as seen in reg deed Oct 1850 18

[damaged with significant loss]dated 28 Nov 1828;Thomas Corlett(Claddagh, Lezayre) + wife Isabella als Corlett sell for £82(Brit) to William Monier(Kk Bride) my share of the Dog Mill in the parish of Bride lately purchased from the Coroner [DN Oct 1850 021]; Witt []Quilliam, [lost]

This damage to the above deed which involved loss of names prompted a replacement deed in reg deed Oct 1850 19

dated 19 Mar 1850;recites sale by John Kelly(coroner) to Thomas Corlett dated 10 Mar 1828 [reg deed Oct 1850 21]of one half of the Dog Mill in the parish of Bride and whereas Thomas Corlett + wife Isabell sold sd premises to Wm Monier by deed dated 28 Nov 1828 [reg deed Oct 1850 18] and whereas Wm Monier + wife Jane sold same for £60 to brother John Monier by deed dated 9 Mar 1850[reg deed Oct 1850 23] but in consequence of deed of sale from Corlett to Monier being defaced it is necessary that it be confirmed by Wm Casement Corlett as heir-at-law to sd Thomas Corlett hence this quiit claim by sd Wm C Corlett; Witt [] Gawne, John Kneale

Thus between 1828 and 1850 Wm Monier was certainly the owner of half the mill though there are still some unresolved transfers for example the other half possibly still resides with John Corlet and Charles Crow or their heirs or assigns. In 1841 a John Monier, aged 70, was noted as miller at the Dog Mills

The deed that required this replacement was reg deed Oct 1850 23 by which Wm sold his half share in the Mill to his brother,

dated 9 Mar 1850;recites sale by John Kelly(coroner) to Thomas Corlet of one half of the Dog Mill in the parish of Bride and sale by sd Thomas Corlett to Wm Monier for £82 now sd Wm Monier + wife Jane sell sd half of mill to brother John Monier for £60; Witt Thomas Arthr Corlett junr, Mark Joughin

and finally the debt to Mark Joughin was repaid by legal transfer of the bond to John Monier who now could recover the £28 from Wm - reg deed Oct 1850 20

dated 12 Apr 1850;recites that Wm Monier(Ballacreggan, Maughold) + wife Jane borrowed £28 from Mark Joughin on security of the Dog Mill in the parish of Bride [reg deed Jun 1848 150] and whereas the £29 13s 6d owing has been advanced by John Monier who became the purchaser of sd mill [reg deed Oct 1850 23] sd Mark Joughin assigns sd B + S to John Monier; Witt James A Corlett junr, John Garrett

The transfer to Cowley and that from Kneale to the Kermode family is still to be located - from July 1858 the papers carried the advert first seen in the Manx Sun, Saturday, July 12, 1856

Sale to take place on the Premises at One o'Clock. For further particulars apply to ROBT. JAS. KELLY, Advocate. Ramsey.

But it seems again no response for in the Manx Sun, Saturday, December 18, 1858

Again it would appear to have drawn no response and the family decided to operate the mills themselves after some further improvements as in Mona's Herald, Wednesday, September 28, 1859; in an article discussing Mr. Walter Teare, of Ballawhane, on the estate of Nassau, and his newly constructed reaping machine, "which has given general satisfaction, and has been let out to many farmers around" -.

It is the workmanship of Mr. James Gill millwrigrht, Kirk Bride, who formerly worked for Mr. Cain, of Ballasalla, and who is now employed constructing new machinery, &c at the Dog Mills, Kirk Bride, which have undergone a thorough repair.

And in November Thomas and son William E A Kermode were advertising for a miller, though in the 1861 census, living at Bay Cottage Wm, aged 23, described himself as miller and farmer of 9ac - Mona's Herald, Monday, November 7, 1859

No one need apply except his Character bears the strictest investigation, aa he will have to Board in the house with the family. Application to be made to T. and W. KERMODE , Sea View, late Dog Mills, Kirk Bride.

Possibly thinking that a their attempts to let the mills were dogged by its name, in Manx Sun, Saturday, October 13, 1866 with some details of the mill machinery - 4 pairs of stones is quite a large mill.

TO MILLERS AND OTHERS.

TO BE LET, FOR a term of years as may be agreed upon those two Water Corn Mills, originally known as the Dog Mills but now as SEA VIEW MILLS, in the Parish of Bride, fitted up with first rate Machinery and capable of doing a large business. Reg deed Jan 1876 34 Elizabeth Douglas by Allan Brown administrator to Robert Alexander Brown fills in some details of the transfer among the Kermode and their need to borrow money

dated 13 Jan 1876; recites that Thomas Kermode(Sea View, Bride) & Wm Edwd Augustus Kermode(farmer Nassau, Bride) did by B + S dated 13 Feb 1873 mortgage for £220 @6% from Elizabeth Douglas(widow, Auckland Terrace Ramsey) those water corn mills + machinery known as the Dog Mills the same being bounded on south by a road leading from Bride road to shore, on north by property of late John Monier, on east by beach and on west by Kk Bride road which mill lands were conveyed by Mrs Margt Kermode + Rev William Kermode to sd Thomas Kermode + Wm E A Kermode by deed dated 5 Nov 1860 [reg deed Jan 1861 23]. also the estate of Nassau in parish of Bride[details omitted here] and whereas sd Elizabeth Douglas died intestate and Allan Brown(coal factor, Ramsey) appt admr at court dated 13 Nov 1874 assigns sd B+S to Robert Alexander Brown(master mariner, Ramsey) for £220; Witt [] Jas Kelly, Richard Hope Price

The final mention of the premises as a mill is in the Isle of Man Times, Saturday, March 27, 1880

FIRE AT BRIDE.— The lower portion of the mills at Kirk Bride, commonly known as the Dog Mills, were destroyed by fire on Thursday morning last

The advert in the Manx Sun, Saturday, November 2, 1878 would suggest that the original Mill was not transferred to the Kermodes.
