[from Smith's Directory, 1883]
A GOOD Commercial Directory of the Isle of Man has been a desideratum for years. Formerly it was attached to one of the English County Directories, which are needlessly expensive, and exceedingly cumbrous; but it has been my desire to supply my numerous subscribers and the general public with a really good work at the lowest remunerative price, and in the most simplified form.
I have pleasure in availing myself of the opportunity furnished by the issue of this first edition to thank, my numerous friends, who have, by their liberal support and information, enabled me to produce the present volume, and should take great pleasure in mentioning their names did not diffidence forbid; but hope the work will give them great satisfaction as it does myself.
F. SMITH.
TOPS GROVE, BRIGHOUSE, 1883.
